Formula 1 2012 – F1 Betting

Published on Mar 04 2012 // Chalk Talk

It is time to take a look at the Formula 1 2012 season preview, and in particular for motorsport fans just how the F1 betting markets are looking before the season gets underway.

Well it is exactly two weeks until the first F1 race of the season begins at Albert Park in Melbourne with the Qantas Australian GP on the 18th March and there is a lot of excitement in anticipation of the new season.  Sebastian Vettel will look to defend his crown as the reigning World Drivers Champion after winning his second championship last year.

The question remains as to whether Vettel and the Red Bull racing team can go for three consecutive Drivers and Constructors Championships in a row.  It seems like a long time since the year 2000 when Michael Schumacher and the Ferrari team went on an amazing run of five such championships in a row.  The Red Bull racing team have surely asserted their authority in recent times and to think that Sebastian Vettel is just 24 years old is remarkable.

Just a simple glance at the pre-season F1 betting markets for the 2012 Formula 1 Drivers Championship says it all, with Vettel at an unbelievably short price of $2.04 to complete a hat trick of wins.  Sports bettors seem incredibly happy to part with their money for a season which stretches all the way into November over 20 different racetracks. The closest rival to Sebastian Vettel is Spaniard Fernando Alonso who is priced at $6.90.

Here are the top 8 drivers to take out the Formula 1 Drivers Championship as stated by the preseason F1 betting markets:

  1. Sebastian Vettel – $2.04
  2. Fernando Alonso – $6.90
  3. Lewis Hawilton – $7.20
  4. Jenson Button – $10.00
  5. Mark Webber – $19.00
  6. Nico Rosberg $42.00
  7. Kimi Raikkonen $43.00
  8. Michael Schumacher $49.00

At SportChalk we always like to look at things from a sports bettors perspective and it may seem like fun to try to pick a winner early on in the season for a particular sport but this does not necessarily translate to what we like to call a smart sports betting proposition.

Sebastian Vettel has every right to be deemed the best chance to yet again take the crown come the end of the Formula 1 season but sports bettors really need to ask themselves if they are happy to wait through such a long season to see whether a bet is successful or not.  The rewards just do not match up with what we ultimately see as a smart bet so there does not appear to be any value here.

None the less for motorsport fans the 2012 Formula 1 season will yet again be an exciting one and we look forward to what is in store.
